I knew she was the Child Whisperer the moment I wandered into her cave. Victoria Carlton is no ordinary educator. She is a hoarder of trinkets and toys, books and baubles, paint and phonics games. She weaves magic out of found objects, creates games from egg cartons and marbles and she can spark the interest of every child she meets.

When she listens to children, she focuses her bespectacled eyes right into them, seeing beyond diagnosis, labels, tantrums and reports to really see what makes this child tick. Her head of flaming red hair frames a kind and intelligent face and she often giggles with delight at the wonders that children share with her.

Kindness informs all her practice. Once assured that the child in her care is valued and respected, she then sets about the task of working with them to get them the kind of education they need, one tailored for them to reach their potential.

She strives for excellence at all times and demands it from herself, foremost, her staff and the children themselves. She questions children deeply and asks them to look at themselves in a way that they might not have previously. Their minds and hearts open. It is beautiful to watch.

Victoria mentors teachers and shares her insights widely. It is her sincere wish to transform education to meet the needs of all children. She envisions a world in which every child is educated in emotionally intelligent ways, in creative and literature soaked lessons and in ways that all children can access phonics, grammar, maths concepts and a life-long love of learning.

Victoria Carlton is much like the dragons she loves, magical, wise and formidable. She is the Child Whisperer.

COULD PETS HELP CHILDREN LEARN?

There is plenty of evidence to show that having pets into workplaces has really positive effects on morale.

Last week we observed the same with children. We were graced with the presence of George- a totally mixed up breed of dog with deformed paws and a wonderfully loving nature.

The children were so taken with his story- abandoned, picked up wandering the streets of Kalgoorlie, desperate for food and love and so on!

We were amazed as we watched children and dog bond and felt the sense of peace and happiness in our classroom.

Could this be a possible answer for kids who have been put off learning and need confidence, re-engagement and renewed faith in themselves?

Every now and again a child would quietly leave their chair and go give a very grateful George a huge hug! Then they would return to their work with renewed energy.

I noticed that the children who generally have problems with concentration and written work  appeared to be more settled and able to engage.

We were so pleased with the result that we will try the experiment again soon and monitor what happens.

It would be interesting to see other learning centers and schools try this PET LEARNING THERAPY!

GEORGE therapy seems to work!

I FELL ON MY KNEES

I was saddened to see the peaceful protest in Indonesia turn violent this week.

Recently I visited Jakarta to present some literacy workshops. I met amazing passionate educators and just like on my previous visit, I was struck by the friendly attitudes and smiles from everyone I encountered.

After 2 days of presenting I was ready to relax!  I stood peering into the enveloping darkness from a high hotel room and was struck by the distance and the number of homes I could see. I felt like an eagle!

And then it came: the call to prayer. It started in one place and was soon joined by others all over the city until the night resonated with these sacred words and music. I haven’t a clue what the words say but I was totally struck by the beauty and holiness of the sounds. I have heard the call for prayer many times but this time I felt the power of a whole city at prayer. There was only one thing to do- join them so I dropped to my knees and joined in.

How different the world might be if we all prayed together in this fashion many times each day?

This week as the world waits to see if Americans really would elect a seemingly crazy person as their President, we should ALL be on our knees!
